Using AlloDerm® or Strattice™ Tissue Matrices
Why use LifeCell Tissue Matrices?
Breast plastic surgery (BPS)
LifeCell Tissue Matrices have a track record of success in breast reconstruction postmastectomy. In 2001, Dr. C. Andrew Salzberg pioneered the use of AlloDerm® Regenerative Tissue Matrix for direct-to-implant (single-stage) breast reconstruction. Since that time, Dr. Salzberg has presented his successful methods and results to surgeons all over the world. With LifeCell’s 2008 introduction of Strattice™ Reconstructive Tissue Matrix - an additional option for a product that supports tissue regeneration - the number of surgeons using LifeCell Tissue Matrices in breast reconstruction after mastectomy has continued to grow.

Today, the use of AlloDerm® Tissue Matrix in breast reconstruction is supported by more medical and scientific articles than have been published for all other competing products combined. In fact, until very recently (2008), no peer-reviewed research had been published for any known competitors. Would you prefer your surgeon to use a product that has little or no published evidence to support its use in breast reconstruction, or a company with products that have a history of published information?

You should also be confident in the company behind the products. LifeCell is a leader in regenerative medicine because of our patented tissue matrix technology. We begin with natural tissue, and through a multi-step proprietary process, we remove or reduce the cellular components that can lead to tissue rejection and graft failure. What remains are the critical biochemical and structural components that allow a natural framework for the body’s tissue regeneration process. The result is that when AlloDerm® Tissue Matrix or Strattice™ Tissue Matrix are implanted in your body, they support the growth of your own tissue.

These results would not be possible without the unique processes LifeCell developed to manufacture AlloDerm® Tissue Matrix and Strattice™ Tissue Matrix. Other products are processed very differently even though they may look the same; therefore, your body may react differently to them. This causes them to behave differently when implanted in the body. For example, some products may resorb in the body, leading to a higher risk of skin flap thinning. The thinner your skin, the more likely it is that your implant could eventually become exposed and move out of place.

Other products may be treated as a foreign object by the body, which may react by surrounding the product with scar tissue (encapsulation). When too much scar tissue builds up, you may be able to feel it - and even see it - under your skin as it becomes hardened over time.

LifeCell has a demonstrated record of success in breast reconstruction and can help your doctor to achieve the results you expect. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of AlloDerm® Tissue Matrix or Strattice™ Tissue Matrix to see if these products are right for you.

Every patient is different and results may vary. Only a physician can determine the best treatment for you. Please ask your doctor to explain the benefits and risks to see if LifeCell products are right for you.
